Three Chinese nationals have been arrested in the country of Georgia after authorities say they attempted to illegally purchase two kilograms of uranium in a deal allegedly worth $400,000.
Authorities allege the group planned to transport the uranium through Russia and ultimately move it to China. Officials have not publicly disclosed the enrichment level of the uranium involved, which would determine its potential use and level of threat.
Georgia, located at a strategic crossroads between Europe and Asia, has previously worked with international partners to combat nuclear smuggling routes that emerged after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Law enforcement agencies say nuclear material trafficking poses significant global security risks, particularly if such materials were to fall into the hands of extremist groups or hostile actors.
It is unclear at this time whether the suspects were acting independently or on behalf of a larger organization. Investigators are continuing to examine communications, financial transactions, and international connections.
